The 10 Best Destination Wedding Hotels in India

Palaces, sea-facing resorts and a desert fort: ten hotels with a credible setting for a celebration, and the practical questions to ask before signing a contract.

Selected by Zinnia Thapar · Updated October 2026

A wedding hotel has two jobs. It must make the photographs look effortless, and it must keep a hundred invisible things from becoming the story: a late arrival, an elderly relative crossing a lawn, a sudden shower, a vendor looking for power, a vegetarian kitchen preparing dinner while another function is still clearing. The most beautiful hotel in India is not necessarily the best venue for your wedding. The best is the one whose rooms, event spaces and team can carry the particular celebration you are planning.

I have resisted treating every photogenic palace as a wedding venue. Each hotel here publishes an official weddings or events offering, and each earns its place for a different reason. Rajasthan provides the grandest architectural stages, Hyderabad brings a different courtly tradition, Goa offers both barefoot energy and formal resort infrastructure, and Bekal makes a compelling case for Kerala's greener coastline. Their capacities, noise rules and available areas change with the date and setup, so these are starting points for a serious venue conversation, not promises of what a particular package includes.

My first call would ask for a proposal covering every ceremony, room block, minimum spend, wet-weather alternative and closing time. I would ask to see the actual route guests take from bedroom to venue, particularly at island properties. Only then would I talk flowers. A stunning mandap is a detail; a seamless two-day experience is the point.

The short answer

For a palace wedding with the strongest sense of occasion, begin with The Oberoi Udaivilas, Umaid Bhawan Palace and Rambagh Palace. For a smaller lakeside gathering, consider Taj Lake Palace; for a contemporary seaside programme, W Goa or Taj Exotica Goa. I would shortlist by guest count and logistics before I fell in love with a photograph.

Plan the celebration

Before choosing your wedding hotel

Start with the guest map

Write down how many guests need bedrooms, how many need step-free access, which airport they will use and when they arrive. A palace with extraordinary lawns may have fewer rooms than your guest list. Ask whether the hotel can hold a room block, where overflow guests would stay, how they would transfer and who pays for those transfers. An exclusive-use quote and a non-exclusive event quote can describe very different experiences.

Test the ceremony plan against the weather

Rajasthan's gentler outdoor season is generally autumn through early spring; Goa and Kerala have a different monsoon calendar and high-season pressure. For every outdoor function, request a written indoor fallback with a layout, not a vague assurance that the team will manage. Confirm sound restrictions, alcohol licensing, fireworks rules, beach permissions and any local approvals directly with the property and planner.

Price the whole weekend

Venue hire is only one line. Ask for room minimums, all food and beverage commitments, décor and production access, vendor fees, service charges, taxes, extra meal periods and cancellation milestones. Insist on a minute-by-minute schedule for load-in and reset between functions. A lower headline quote can become the dearer wedding once logistics and guests' journeys are counted.

01
Lake Pichola, Udaipur, Rajasthan

The Oberoi Udaivilas

Best for: A composed lakeside palace weddingLakefront resort · indoor and outdoor events

If I had to choose one Indian hotel where the setting and the machinery of a destination wedding appear equally convincing, I would start here. Udaivilas sits on the western shore of Lake Pichola, its domes, courtyards and gardens designed around processions and changes of scene. The hotel openly offers weddings and private celebrations, so a multi-function weekend can be discussed with an experienced team rather than invented around a beautiful but impractical room. Guests get Udaipur's familiar skyline across the water without needing to sleep on an island. There is room for quiet between functions, which matters more than it sounds: the wedding party can disappear for an hour and return to a different mood. The look is regal but the operation feels resort-like, a useful combination when relatives have widely different ideas of a perfect stay.

Know before booking: Ask which lawns and terraces are available on your dates, how much of the resort remains open to other guests, and what the indoor rain plan looks like. A lake view is not the same as exclusive use.

02
Chittar Hill, Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Best for: Monumental palace theatreHistoric palace · halls, courtyards and lawns

Umaid Bhawan is for couples who want the arrival to feel like an event before the first event has begun. The sandstone palace rises above Jodhpur with a scale few hotels can imitate, and its official event portfolio moves from ornate indoor halls to the Baradari Lawn and Fountain Courtyard. That range is valuable: the mehendi, dinner and ceremony need not all be staged against the same wall. I would keep the palace itself as the protagonist, using the architecture rather than trying to outdecorate it. Jodhpur's strong sunlight, blue old city and Mehrangarh Fort give guests a genuine destination outside the wedding programme. The palace remains a residence as well as a hotel, however, and its extraordinary status deserves more careful contracting than a standard resort ballroom.

Know before booking: Clarify exactly which areas are private, how many bedrooms are in your block and whether separate city accommodation is needed. Setup capacities differ by event format; request plans for each function.

03
Bhawani Singh Road, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Rambagh Palace

Best for: Old Jaipur grandeur with city accessRoyal residence · gardens and banquet spaces

Rambagh is a Jaipur landmark with the authority of a former royal residence, not a new hotel dressed for a theme party. Its gardens make an especially persuasive setting for large family functions, while the indoor spaces offer the formality that a late-night reception or elaborate dinner can need. For a wedding connected to Jaipur itself, guests can visit the forts, bazaars and ateliers without treating sightseeing as an expedition from a distant resort. The peacocks, long vistas and palace rooms provide visual abundance, but the hotel's real advantage is that it can support several distinct moments across one estate. A clever planner would give each function a different scale, letting the smaller gatherings feel intimate instead of turning every hour into a spectacle.

Know before booking: Centrality does not equal privacy. Ask which gardens are available, whether other events overlap, how traffic and security are managed, and where overflow guests would stay.

04
Lake Pichola, Udaipur, Rajasthan

The Leela Palace Udaipur

Best for: A dramatic water-level arrivalLakeside palace hotel · varied celebration spaces

The Leela's appeal is immediate and cinematic: arrive at the edge of Lake Pichola and the palace gives the water a starring role. Its weddings team publishes a range of banquet and outdoor spaces, including options for considerably smaller gatherings, which makes it more adaptable than an image of one huge lawn suggests. I would place the welcome dinner by the lake and give the main ceremony a setting with enough breathing room for guests to see the city beyond the décor. The hotel is polished, unabashedly romantic and capable of giving visitors a strong sense of Udaipur without making them travel between venues. It is particularly persuasive for couples who want palace atmosphere but also want a contemporary hotel's event infrastructure and a clear conversation about menus, rooms and production.

Know before booking: Do not assume that every picturesque terrace is a permitted wedding space. Ask for the exact venue plan, weather alternative, guest transfer arrangements and a written capacity for your seating format.

05
Falaknuma, Hyderabad, Telangana

Taj Falaknuma Palace

Best for: A courtly celebration beyond RajasthanHistoric Nizam palace · lawns and formal rooms

India's palace wedding conversation too often stops in Rajasthan. Falaknuma makes me want to change the subject. Set high above Hyderabad, the former Nizam residence has the sort of ceremonial approach that slows everybody down, then answers it with formal halls, gardens and terraces. Taj explicitly markets its grounds for weddings, and the different spaces make it possible to move between a more private family ritual and a far larger reception. The city contributes its own cultural vocabulary—Hyderabadi food, Deccani architecture and a sense of occasion quite unlike Udaipur's lake romance. I would lean into that identity rather than importing a generic royal-wedding template. For guests arriving from several Indian metros, Hyderabad can also be an easier meeting point than a smaller leisure airport, though actual flight schedules must be checked for your dates.

Know before booking: The palace has a particular historic character and access protocol. Confirm decor limits, vehicle routing, vendor arrival windows and whether your preferred functions can occupy the spaces shown in promotional imagery.

06
Bishangarh, near Jaipur, Rajasthan

Alila Fort Bishangarh

Best for: A fort wedding with genuine distance from the cityRestored hilltop fort · terraces and lawns

Bishangarh has what many destination venues are trying to manufacture: the sensation of leaving ordinary life behind. The fort sits above a village in the Aravallis; the hotel's official wedding spaces include lawns, a terrace and smaller architectural settings that can change the rhythm of a weekend. It suits a tightly edited guest list and a celebration willing to use the place's existing stone, horizons and evening light. It is neither a downtown Jaipur hotel nor a blank ballroom, and that is its strength. Guests who arrive expecting a resort built around constant choice may need a different invitation; those who enjoy the idea of sharing a remarkable fortified address for two nights will understand the appeal immediately.

Know before booking: The fort is well outside central Jaipur. Confirm transfer times, accessibility between event spaces, bedroom allocation across categories and any constraints on heavy production or late music.

07
Lake Pichola island, Udaipur, Rajasthan

Taj Lake Palace

Best for: A smaller celebration on the waterHistoric island palace · select event spaces

At Taj Lake Palace, the journey is part of the invitation. Guests cross Lake Pichola to a white palace that seems to float, and Udaipur's shore becomes a moving backdrop rather than a fixed view from a terrace. The hotel advertises wedding and event spaces, though the romance of the island needs to be matched to the size and shape of the gathering. I find it most convincing for a smaller, carefully paced celebration: a courtyard or intimate room, a dinner that lets the architecture speak, perhaps another function onshore rather than forcing every moment into the palace. It is a rare setting where restraint can feel more luxurious than scale. The trick is to let the water and historic rooms do work that flowers and sets would otherwise have to do.

Know before booking: All guest and vendor movements depend on boat logistics. Ask exactly which events take place at the hotel and which, if any, use another island venue; those are distinct contracts and settings.

08
Vagator, North Goa

W Goa

Best for: A high-energy coastal weekendContemporary resort · multiple indoor and outdoor spaces

For a couple who wants their wedding to feel like a party from the first sundowner, W Goa offers a very different script from Rajasthan. The hotel's own wedding page maps functions across its bar, pool, lawn, restaurant and indoor room, so the welcome drinks, mehendi and late evening can have different temperatures without shifting everybody to another property. Vagator's rocky coastline and Chapora setting give it an unmistakable North Goa character; this is not an interchangeable strip of sand. I would use the more relaxed spaces for daytime gatherings and save the room with reliable acoustics and weather cover for the event that cannot be interrupted. It is a compelling venue for friends-heavy celebrations where music and movement matter as much as a formal entrance.

Know before booking: North Goa is busy in peak season, and an outdoor sound plan needs written confirmation. Check which spaces can be exclusive, how vendor access works and what the monsoon fallback actually looks like.

09
Benaulim, South Goa

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa

Best for: A classic beach-resort weddingSeafront resort · beach lawns and ballroom

Taj Exotica is my answer to a couple who wants Goa but would rather have a calm, formal base than a nightclub soundtrack. Its South Goa setting comes with lawns facing the Arabian Sea and a proper ballroom, both listed in the hotel's events offering. That pairing is wedding gold: one can host the postcard moment outdoors and still make a serious plan for a dinner, reception or weather change. The estate also gives guests a reason to settle in between functions instead of dispersing across the coast. I would keep the programme simple enough to enjoy that sense of space—perhaps a warm welcome, a beach-facing ceremony and a dinner that does not require another transfer. Compared with W Goa, this is a more traditional resort personality, and for many families that will be an advantage.

Know before booking: Beach access is not a blanket permit to build on the sand. Ask the team to distinguish private lawns from public beach areas and confirm approvals, tides, weather cover and noise rules.

10
Bekal, Kerala

Taj Bekal Resort & Spa

Best for: A greener coastal gatheringBackwater and beach resort · lawns and indoor hall

Bekal offers a welcome change of register: palms, waterways and Kerala's quieter north coast rather than another palace or Goa weekend. Taj publishes several event spaces here, including lawns and an indoor hall, so the setting can support more than one function without asking a single beach-facing patch of grass to do everything. Its best audience is a family that values time together as much as the wedding's most photographed hour. Guests can arrive, slow down and let the landscape change the pace of the celebration. The resort's architecture and grounds invite softer colours and less theatrical production, which can feel remarkably fresh after a season of identical floral arches. The practical case rests on matching the guest list to the hotel's rooms and the property's actual access arrangements.

Know before booking: Bekal is a destination rather than an easy urban meeting point. Price transfers from the airports your guests will use, and plan carefully around Kerala's rain patterns and outdoor-event permissions.

Questions, answered

Planning a destination wedding in India

Which Indian destination is best for a palace wedding?
Udaipur is strongest if a lake setting is central to the idea; Jodhpur brings monumental sandstone and the Blue City; Jaipur combines palace hotels with a fuller city itinerary for guests. Hyderabad's Falaknuma Palace is an excellent alternative if you want a different cultural and culinary story. I would make the final choice from venue availability, bedrooms and travel routes rather than city reputation alone.
How far in advance should we enquire about a destination wedding hotel?
For a coveted winter weekend or peak coastal season, start discussions as early as your date and approximate guest count are credible. Ask the property how long it can hold event spaces and room blocks, and which payments make that hold binding. The right lead time varies by hotel and season; an enquiry is not a reservation.
Can a hotel arrange a wedding ceremony on a public beach or historic monument?
Do not assume so. A resort's sea-facing lawn, a public beach and a protected monument are different venues with different rights and permissions. Ask the hotel and your planner for written confirmation of the exact footprint, sound rules, licences and contingency space before designing a ceremony around it.
What should be in a destination wedding hotel proposal?
Request a function-by-function venue schedule; room inventory and overflow plan; menus and minimum spends; décor and production rules; staff and service charges; taxes; transfer arrangements; sound and alcohol cut-offs; weather alternatives; cancellation terms; and the name of the person empowered to solve problems on the day. That document is more useful than a starting price per plate.
