Amangiri

Amangiri is less a hotel than a piece of land art you can sleep inside. The architects poured board-formed concrete in the exact grey-gold of the surrounding rock, so the building looks quarried rather than built. From a distance you can barely pick it out.

The suites are monastic in the best way: vast, spare, and angled so the desert becomes the only decoration. There are no televisions fighting the view, and the view would win anyway. Days go on slot-canyon hikes, on Lake Powell, or on doing gloriously nothing at all.

The desert is not empty

Amangiri occupies 900 acres of the Colorado Plateau near the Arizona border, where rock, archaeological history and Navajo land make the landscape culturally as well as geologically complex. The architecture's sand-coloured concrete is powerful because it defers to those formations. Guides should give the scenery language and context, not present it as an unclaimed backdrop for luxury adventure.

The central pool wraps a sandstone escarpment rather than replacing it, and paths move from highly controlled rooms into open desert within minutes. Twelve-plus miles of designated trails permit self-guided walks, while daily guided hikes are included in the stay. More ambitious via ferrata routes, slot-canyon visits, Lake Powell excursions and flights cost extra and require weather-aware planning.

Choose a suite by light

The resort's 34 suites share stone floors, concrete walls, fireplaces and private outdoor space but face different landforms. Mesa categories are positioned for rose-gold sunsets; Desert Suites look across dunes and plateaus; pool suites trade still more money for water and a sky terrace. The entry Orchard and Mesa options are already around 93 square metres, so orientation is usually a better upgrade than raw size.

Camp Sarika, five minutes by vehicle or a longer walk away, is a separate ten-pavilion experience with canvas, private pools and a stronger expedition mood. It is not simply Amangiri's better room. Split stays suit travellers who genuinely want two rhythms; otherwise choose the architecture—main resort or camp—that matches the trip and stay put.

What is included, and what is not

Current standard inclusions cover full board for two guests per room, non-alcoholic refreshments, airport transfers from Page, a scheduled wellness class and guided group hikes. Alcohol, private guiding and major excursions can move the bill substantially. Build the desired itinerary before judging the room rate, because a quiet pool stay and a week of private adventure are financially different products.

The isolation is profound and deliberately maintained. Page is the practical air gateway; Las Vegas and Phoenix involve long drives. Summer heat limits exposed activity and winter changes access, making shoulder seasons attractive but never predictable. Amangiri rewards four or five nights and an appetite for landscape. Those seeking social energy, abundant restaurant choice or spontaneous town life will find the silence expensive.

The itinerary extends far beyond the pool

The famous rock-embracing pool is only the still centre of a 900-acre property with more than 12 miles of marked trails. Guided hikes, via ferrata routes, canyon excursions, horse rides and Lake Powell outings can turn the stay athletic quickly. Some experiences cost extra and require weather windows, minimum ages or firm footing; confirm difficulty and pricing rather than letting cinematic photographs write the schedule.

Amangiri's main pavilion has 34 suites, while Camp Sarika sits apart with ten tented pavilions and its own pool and restaurant. The camp offers privacy and immediate desert immersion; the main resort provides easier access to spa, dining and the architectural icon. Transfers between them are short but meaningful. Three nights permit one major expedition and recovery; four make room for weather. The desert is the luxury, and over-programming is the fastest way to miss it.

The Verdict

The price is eye-watering and the experience very nearly justifies it. If you want to understand what luxury minimalism actually means, this remote patch of Utah is where you learn it.
