The 85-key inventory ranges from 386-square-foot Premier Rooms to larger balcony categories and one- or two-bedroom cottages. Gulmarg View rooms look over gardens and meadows; Himalayan View rooms turn toward the mountains and can justify their premium when weather opens. A balcony is more valuable in summer and shoulder season than in deep snow, when a warm window seat may be the practical luxury.

Interiors use timber, Kashmiri craft references and deep colours to create an alpine rather than palace mood. The public rooms become busy when lifts close and weather drives everyone indoors. Couples seeking quiet should request distance from family circulation; groups should secure connecting arrangements early because ski weeks concentrate demand.

After the gondola

The hotel is not ski-in/ski-out in the European sense, though proximity to the Gulmarg Gondola is a major advantage. Equipment, lift tickets, guides and avalanche conditions need separate attention. Off-piste terrain is serious and should be approached only with qualified local expertise. In summer, walks, meadow rides and the outdoor Niku pop-up replace snow sports with a gentler mountain rhythm.

Brava supplies Italian comfort, while Nouf is positioned for more intimate dining; seasonal outlets vary. The L'Occitane spa and heated indoor pool are crucial after cold days. The Khyber's strength is giving Gulmarg a credible luxury base, not insulating guests from the realities of the Himalaya. Those realities should shape every booking decision.

Snow makes the hotel—and complicates it

Winter access to Gulmarg depends on road, weather and local vehicle rules. Flights into Srinagar can be delayed, the final drive lengthens in snow and luggage may change vehicles before the hotel. Build buffer into both directions, carry proper footwear and do not place a non-refundable international connection immediately after checkout. The inconvenience is inseparable from the landscape guests have come to see.

The Khyber has 85 rooms and cottages, but not every category faces the Apharwat peaks. Valley or forest outlooks can be quieter and less costly; mountain rooms deliver the expected drama when cloud permits. Skiing at Gulmarg is not a manicured European resort system: lift status, avalanche risk, guides and equipment require active planning. Non-skiers have the pool, spa and snow landscape, though a long stay can feel enclosed when storms close the mountain.
