Nihi Sumba

Sumba lies a short flight but a whole world away from Bali, drier, wilder and far less touched. Nihi began life as a legendary surf camp built around a private left-hand wave, and it has grown into one of the most distinctive resorts anywhere without losing its soul.

Days are spent surfing, riding the resort's beloved horses along the sand, trekking to the famous cliffside spa, or simply staring at a landscape that feels prehistoric. A share of proceeds funds the Sumba Foundation, which does serious work across the island.

The journey is part of the filtering

NIHI sits on Sumba's remote southwest coast, reached through Bali and a domestic flight followed by a long road transfer. Connections should be buffered; weather and airline schedules can unpick a tightly chained itinerary. The distance protects the sense of arrival and makes very short stays irrational. Five nights is a beginning, seven allows the island to move beyond resort scenery.

The villas spread along slopes above Nihiwatu Beach, each with a different arrangement of pools, pavilions and bedrooms. The best category depends on stairs, privacy and proximity to the main hub, not merely ocean view. Families should scrutinise railings and pool layouts; surfers should discuss access to the wave rather than assume a room rate includes an uncrowded session.

Horses, surf and Spa Safari

The Sandalwood horses are central to NIHI's imagery and to Sumbanese culture. Riding programmes range from beach outings to deeper equine retreats, with experience requirements and welfare protocols worth discussing. The famous surf break is controlled for limited guest use and requires ability; the ocean can be powerful, and this is not a generic learn-to-surf beach.

Spa Safari sends guests along the coast by hike, vehicle or horse to Nihioka for several hours of treatments above the sea; an overnight villa can extend the escape without Wi-Fi. It is genuinely distinctive and also expensive, with transport and specific therapies carrying supplements. Choose it as a full day, not an item squeezed between other activities.

Luxury within a living island

NIHI's relationship with Sumba cannot be reduced to village visits. The Sumba Foundation supports health, water, education and livelihoods, and guests should learn how activities are designed with communities rather than assuming proximity equals benefit. Photography requires permission; poverty is not cultural texture for a resort story.

Food, horses, wild beach and unusually individual villas create an emotional, less polished style than a global-brand island resort. Service can move at the pace of remoteness, and humid weather tests maintenance. That texture is part of the appeal for adventurous travellers and a warning for those who want every edge smoothed. NIHI is not perfect; it is difficult to confuse with anywhere else.

Remoteness needs planning, not romance alone

Most guests reach Sumba on a domestic flight from Bali and continue by a substantial road transfer; schedules, baggage limits and weather can disturb the smoothest itinerary. Leave a buffer before an international departure and bring essential medication in hand luggage. Once at the resort, the isolation is productive, but it should never be mistaken for effortless access.

Villas differ dramatically in beach access, elevation, pool size and number of bedrooms. Surfers should discuss Occy's Left and ability requirements before assuming the famous wave belongs to every stay; numbers are controlled and conditions rule. The Spa Safari involves a trek to Nio Beach followed by treatments in open pavilions, while horse experiences range beyond the cinematic gallop. Nihi is most responsible when the Sumbanese staff, foundation work and island culture are treated as central, not supporting scenery for adventure.

The Verdict

Barefoot luxury with genuine purpose and a real edge of adventure. Not for everyone, and all the better for it. Few island resorts leave a more distinct impression.
